Curling’s origins date back to 16th-century Scotland, making it one of the world’s oldest team sports. Often referred to as “chess on ice”, to the untrained eye, Curling mostly resembles frozen lawn bowls.
Athletes take turns sliding circular 20-kilogram granite stones along the ice toward the centre of a horizontal target 28 metres away. Teams are awarded points for getting their stones closest to the centre of the target, or “house” in 6, 8 or 10 rounds. One point is awarded for every stone that lies closer to the "house". This requires a great deal of patience! After all, who doesn't enjoy knocking their opponents out of play shortly before they are about to win?
With the sport beginning to enjoy increasing popularity, more and more curling activities are popping up in and around Graubunden including: lessons, championships and tuition for seniors +60.
